Sample Variance Considerations for Cluster Surveys

چکیده
We present a general statistical framework for describing the effect of sample variance in the number counts of virialized objects and examine its effect on cosmological parameter estimation. Specifically, we consider effects of sample variance on the power spectrum normalization and properties of dark energy extracted from current and future local and high-redshift samples of clusters. We show that for future surveys that probe ever lower cluster masses and temperatures, sample variance is generally comparable to or greater than shot noise and thus cannot be neglected in deriving precision cosmological constraints. For example, sample variance is usually more important than shot variance in constraints on the equation of state of the dark energy from z < 1 clusters. Although we found that effects of sample variance on the σ8−Ωm constraints from the current flux and temperature limited X-ray surveys are not significant, they may be important for future studies utilizing the shape of the temperature function to break the σ8 − Ωm degeneracy. We also present numerical tests clarifying the definition of cluster mass employed in cosmological modelling and accurate fitting formula for the conversion between different definitions of halo mass (e.g., virial vs. fixed overdensity).

Two-stage Sample Design with Small Clusters
In two-stage surveys, the sample size of clusters and units within clusters can be chosen to minimise the variance of an estimator, for fixed cost. This paper considers sample designs where the number of units to be selected from each cluster is a function of the cluster size. If there are only a small number of units in each cluster, as in household surveys, then the optimisation should be ove...
متن کاملSoftware Alternatives for Variance Estimation in the Analysis of Complex Sample Surveys: A Comparison of SAS Survey Procedures, SUDAAN, and AM
The use of standard statistical software for the analysis of data collected from complex sample surveys yields biased point estimates of parameters and incorrect standard errors as a result of unequal probabilities of selection of observations, stratification and clustering, and unit nonresponse. The appropriate analysis of data from complex sample surveys requires the use of software that inco...
متن کاملLinearization Variance Estimators for Longitudinal Survey Data
In survey sampling, Taylor linearization is often used to obtain variance estimators for nonlinear finite population parameters, such as ratios, regression and correlation coefficients, which can be expressed as smooth functions of totals. Taylor linearization is generally applicable to any sampling design, but it can lead to multiple variance estimators that are asymptotically design unbiased ...

Hughes & Gaztañaga (2001, see article in these proceedings) have presented realistic simulations to address key issues confronting existing and forthcoming submm surveys. An important aspect illustrated by the simulations is the effect induced on the counts by the sampling variance of the large-scale galaxy clustering. We find factors of up to ∼ 2 − 4 variation (from the mean) in the extracted ...
متن کاملSample size considerations for GEE analyses of three-level cluster randomized trials.
Cluster randomized trials in health care may involve three instead of two levels, for instance, in trials where different interventions to improve quality of care are compared. In such trials, the intervention is implemented in health care units ("clusters") and aims at changing the behavior of health care professionals working in this unit ("subjects"), while the effects are measured at the pa...
